Three Killed, Several Missing After Convoy Attack in Kurram
KURRAM – April 12: At least three people lost their lives and several others went missing after unidentified gunmen attacked a convoy traveling from Parachinar to Peshawar in the Bagan area of Lower Kurram on Friday, sparking widespread protests throughout the district.
According to the Kurram district administration, the attack occurred in the Dad Qamar area, where the armed assailants opened fire on the group. The deceased have been identified as Tahir Hussain, Safar Ali, and Mazar Hussain. As of late Friday night, several individuals were still unaccounted for.
The bodies were transferred to Parachinar, where news of the deadly assault ignited demonstrations and anger among the local population. Additional Commissioner Amir Nawaz confirmed the handover of the bodies to their respective families and assured that a full investigation is underway.
Family members of the victims stated that the men were en route to Peshawar to renew their visas or make travel arrangements abroad, as their documents were close to expiration.
Ongoing Violence on Parachinar-Thall Road
The Thall-Parachinar Road — the main route connecting Kurram with the rest of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa — has remained closed since the deadly Nov 21, 2024, attack that left over 50 people dead. Since then, tribal violence over long-standing land disputes has claimed more than 130 additional lives.
With the road still blocked, convoys protected by government forces have been the only way to deliver vital supplies like food and medicine. However, these convoys have frequently come under attack. A recent incident in Lower Kurram resulted in multiple casualties and the burning of supply trucks.
Accusations Against Local Officials
During a press conference, tribal elders including Haji Imdad Ali accused local officials of corruption — allegedly accepting bribes to allow certain trucks into the protected convoys. They criticized the administration’s failure to restore full access to the road, despite an eight-month peace agreement signed on March 29.
“Officials are extorting traders just to include their vehicles in convoys,” said Haji Imdad Ali. “We demand the immediate reopening of all roads in the district.”
Protest and Public Reaction
On Tuesday, traders in Parachinar city observed a complete shutter-down strike in protest of the prolonged road closure and deteriorating security conditions. The strike reflects growing frustration among residents and businesses impacted by the blockade and violence.
