Sindh Launches Massive Polio Vaccination Drive Targeting 10.6 Million Children
Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah Inaugurates Week-Long Campaign Amid Heatwave and Security Challenges
Karachi, April 21 – Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah inaugurated a province-wide polio vaccination campaign on Monday, aiming to immunize 10.6 million children under five against the crippling virus. The week-long drive, running from April 21 to 27, underscores Pakistan’s intensified efforts to eradicate polio, one of the last two countries globally—alongside Afghanistan—where the disease remains endemic.
Campaign Details: Scale and Strategy
- Targeted Coverage: Over 2.76 million children in Karachi and 7.84 million across other parts of Sindh will receive polio drops.
- Frontline Workforce: A team of 69,724 trained health workers will conduct door-to-door visits, reaching schools, transit points, and public spaces.
- Security Measures: 25,360 police personnel have been deployed to safeguard vaccination teams, addressing historical security challenges in high-risk areas.
Addressing Vaccine Hesitancy and Misinformation
With Pakistan reporting over 70 polio cases in 2023, CM Shah urged parents to cooperate with health workers, stressing, “Polio has no cure. Vaccination is the only shield against lifelong paralysis.” He reassured skeptics by highlighting that the same vaccine is administered to Hajj and Umrah pilgrims, emphasizing its safety and efficacy.
Heatwave Challenges and Worker Support
Amid scorching temperatures, the government is providing ORS sachets, water, and essential supplies to frontline workers. Shah praised their dedication, stating, “Their tireless efforts are vital to protecting our future generations.”
Cold Chain Assurance and Repeat Doses
The CM confirmed strict adherence to vaccine storage protocols to maintain potency. He also clarified that even recently vaccinated children should receive additional doses during the campaign to ensure immunity.
Background: Pakistan’s Polio Struggle
Despite global eradication progress, Pakistan faces hurdles like misinformation, security threats to health workers, and logistical challenges. Sindh’s campaign reflects a broader national push to eliminate the virus, with polio teams often operating in volatile regions.
