The Sindhi Association of North America (SANA) has extended its heartfelt congratulations to the people of Sindh — particularly the legal fraternity — on their successful protest in Babrlo against the controversial leasing of land for six canal projects and corporate farming initiatives.
Thanks to the dedication and courage of the protestors, work on these disputed canals was immediately halted, marking a significant step in the ongoing resistance. SANA praised this victory and welcomed the protestors’ resolve to continue their struggle with strategic planning and renewed energy.
SANA expressed hope that forthcoming discussions with the Sindh government will result in the cancellation of the land leases associated with corporate farming, which the organization strongly opposes. It has called for the immediate termination of all such agreements.
The organization also acknowledged and thanked the Sindhi diaspora in North America for their unwavering support. Their contributions were vital in setting up protest camps in Babrlo and in providing logistical support and resources to the demonstrators.
Reaffirming its long-standing commitment to defending Sindh’s ownership over its natural resources, SANA emphasized that this recent success is only a partial step. The cancellation of IRSA (Indus River System Authority) notifications and suspension of canal projects, while politically expedient, do not address deeper structural issues.
To that end, SANA reiterated its demand for:
- Reforms in the IRSA Act to correct fundamental flaws
- Transparent, third-party monitoring systems at major barrages
- Equal representation of all provinces in the Council of Common Interests (CCI)
SANA concluded its statement by saluting the people of Sindh for their historic efforts. “Through this movement, Sindhis have shown their unwavering commitment to protect their land, rights, and the lifeblood of their identity — the waters of the Indus River,” said SANA leadership.
