Pakistan Achieves Diplomatic Objectives at UNSC Amid Rising South Asia Tensions: Asim Iftikhar

Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Asim Iftikhar, stated on Tuesday that Pakistan’s core objectives were “largely served and achieved” during a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) session convened to address escalating tensions in South Asia following a deadly attack in Pahalgam, occupied Kashmir.

The April 22 attack, which claimed 26 lives—mostly tourists—was followed by India’s unsubstantiated claims of cross-border involvement. Pakistan strongly rejected the allegations, calling for a neutral and transparent investigation.

In the aftermath, both nations have heightened military readiness. Pakistan reiterated its preference for peace, while warning it remains prepared to defend its sovereignty under Article 51 of the UN Charter.

Addressing the UNSC, Iftikhar emphasized that the region’s peace cannot be maintained through unilateralism, but through principled diplomacy and adherence to international law. He expressed concern over India’s recent unilateral actions, military escalations, and inflammatory rhetoric, which Pakistan views as dangerously provocative.

Crucially, several UNSC members acknowledged the need for a peaceful resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute in line with UN resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.

Iftikhar also highlighted India’s suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, labeling any disruption to Pakistan’s water supply as “aggression,” and stressing that water should never be weaponized.

Pakistan condemned India’s disinformation campaigns and attempts to shift focus from its human rights violations in Kashmir. The ambassador reminded the council of Pakistan’s significant sacrifices in the fight against terrorism and called for accountability regarding Indian actions abroad, including the Kulbhushan Jadhav case and cross-border assassinations.

Reaffirming Pakistan’s openness to dialogue based on mutual respect and sovereign equality, Iftikhar urged the UNSC to remain actively engaged and play a proactive role in preventing conflict.

He concluded by stating: “The people of Kashmir have waited far too long for justice. Pakistan seeks peace, but we will not compromise on our rights, our security, or our sovereignty.”
