Malir Jail Break: 225 Inmates Confirmed to Have Escaped, 146 Recaptured So Far

Jun 10, 2025

Authorities have confirmed that 225 inmates escaped from Malir Jail during a brazen jailbreak on June 3, revising the original count of 216. According to prison officials, a comprehensive audit conducted by the new jail administration uncovered that nine additional prisoners were unaccounted for in the initial assessment.

In a formal letter to the Malir Investigation Department, newly appointed Superintendent Shahabuddin Siddiqi reported that the recount was conducted during the Eid holidays following his assumption of charge on June 4. The revised figures revealed that one escapee had been mistakenly listed twice, further clarifying the total number of escapees.

So far, 146 of the 225 prisoners have been recaptured, while 79 remain at large. Law enforcement agencies continue an intensified manhunt in and around Karachi to locate the remaining fugitives.

Fatalities Among Escapees

Authorities have also confirmed two fatalities linked to the incident. One escapee, Raza Pervez Masi, reportedly committed suicide in the Madina Colony area of Maripur, while another was shot and killed during a post-escape encounter with law enforcement.

Timeline of the Jailbreak

The escape occurred in the early hours of June 3, when inmates breached the prison wall, triggering chaos and a swift response from police and paramilitary units. Gunfire was reported near the facility shortly after the breakout, intensifying fears of a coordinated escape plot.

A security cordon was immediately established around the jail, and search operations were launched in adjoining areas. Police have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity, particularly around escape routes and urban hideouts.

Investigation Underway

While the immediate focus remains on tracking down the remaining fugitives, a formal inquiry into the security lapse and potential inside collaboration is expected in the coming days.

Security experts and rights groups have long raised concerns about the conditions and infrastructure of prisons in Sindh, calling for improved surveillance, personnel training, and accountability mechanisms.
