Sana Mir Becomes First Pakistani Woman Inducted into ICC Hall of Fame

Jun 10, 2025

Former Pakistan women’s cricket captain Sana Mir has made history by becoming the first Pakistani woman to be inducted into the International Cricket Council (ICC) Hall of Fame. The prestigious honour was announced on Monday during a ceremony held ahead of the World Test Championship final.

Sana joins a star-studded 2025 class that includes India’s MS Dhoni, England’s Sarah Taylor, South Africa’s Hashim Amla and Graeme Smith, Australia’s Matthew Hayden, and New Zealand’s Daniel Vettori. The announcement was made by West Indies legend Ian Bishop.

A pioneering figure in Pakistan women’s cricket, Sana played internationally from 2005 to 2019 and captained the side for eight years. She holds the record for the most ODI wickets by a Pakistani woman (151) and was the first Asian woman to feature in 100 T20 internationals. In 2018, she became the first Pakistani woman to top the ICC ODI bowling rankings.

Under her captaincy, Pakistan secured major milestones including two Asian Games gold medals (2010 and 2014), and historic wins such as their first ODI victory over South Africa. She also led the team in five T20 World Cups and two ODI World Cups, delivering standout performances like her 5 for 14 against Scotland in the 2017 World Cup.

“From playing street cricket in Pakistan to this moment today, it’s been an incredible journey,” Sana said during the ceremony. “This is a very emotional moment for me.”

Sana Mir is now the eighth Pakistani cricketer and only the 15th woman globally to receive this honour. She joins an elite group of Pakistani legends in the Hall of Fame, including Imran Khan, Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Javed Miandad, Abdul Qadir, Hanif Mohammad, and Zaheer Abbas.

Since retiring in 2019, Sana has remained an active advocate for women’s empowerment, sports development, and mental health awareness, continuing to inspire a new generation of athletes.
