Specialist Batters ‘Outdated’ in T20 Cricket: Pakistan Coach Mike Hesson

Jun 10, 2025

Pakistan’s white-ball head coach Mike Hesson has labelled the role of specialist batters in T20 cricket as “outdated,” calling for players who can contribute in multiple disciplines and adapt to team needs. His comments come in the wake of Pakistan’s 3-0 series victory over Bangladesh, which saw the team adopt a more aggressive, counter-attacking strategy.

“The idea of just specialist batters is very much outdated,” Hesson stated in a recent interview. “You’ve got to be above par with the bat and below par with the ball, and that’s the way we’ll be trying to operate.”

Hesson, who has previously found success with Islamabad United in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), said that the foundations laid during the Bangladesh series exemplify the style of play he envisions for the national side — one that emphasizes versatility, intent, and tactical flexibility. He advocates for lineups with six to eight bowling options to give captains more strategic control.

While acknowledging that results may not come immediately, Hesson expressed confidence that long-term progress is possible if the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), selectors, and senior players remain aligned on goals and timelines. “People must understand we will have ups and downs, but if everyone is on the same page about when and where to peak, there is a clear process,” he added.

Responding to the absence of senior players like Babar Azam, Shaheen Shah Afridi, and Mohammad Rizwan from recent squad selections, Hesson clarified that no one has been permanently dropped. However, inclusion will be based strictly on alignment with team goals and performance expectations.

“It becomes pretty apparent if someone is playing for personal milestones,” he cautioned, reinforcing his commitment to team-first cricket.

Hesson’s approach marks a significant shift in Pakistan’s white-ball strategy, focusing on smart, measured cricket that balances aggression with game awareness — and aims to build a side capable of long-term success on the global stage.
