COAS Asim Munir Calls for Trade, Not Aid, in Strategic US Engagement

Jun 21, 2025

Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir has stated that Pakistan is not seeking aid or security assistance from the United States, but rather aims to establish a relationship grounded in trade, investment, and mutual dignity.

During a closed-door session in Washington with senior scholars, policy analysts, and media representatives, the army chief underscored Pakistan’s desire for a balanced and respectful partnership. Participants described his demeanor as composed and confident — a marked contrast to his previous visit.

“We want to be treated with respect,” Munir said, while also lauding former US President Donald Trump as “one of the greatest leaders” following their recent meeting at the White House. Though he refrained from sharing details of the two-hour interaction, he called it a “fantastic” exchange with “strategic clarity.”

Munir touched on a broad spectrum of topics, including Pakistan-US ties, terrorism, economic opportunities, democratic evolution, and foreign relations. He firmly rejected India’s portrayal of Pakistan on the global stage, reiterating the country’s commitment to equality and tolerance by invoking Quaid-e-Azam’s vision of inclusive citizenship.

He clarified that Pakistan’s partnerships with China and the US are not at odds. “China has never asked us to disengage from the US,” he said, urging American policymakers to view Pakistan independently — not through the lens of its neighbors.

On internal development, the army chief acknowledged Pakistan’s democratic imperfections but affirmed the country’s aspiration to strengthen institutions and build a model inspired by democratic systems like the United States.

Addressing regional security, Munir accused India of destabilizing Pakistan through proxy groups and reiterated Pakistan’s calls for peace and diplomacy, especially regarding the escalating tensions in the Middle East.

A statement from ISPR highlighted that the COAS’s engagements with top US think tanks and strategic affairs institutions allowed Pakistan to clearly articulate its stance on key global issues. The session included detailed discussions on “Operation Bunyanum Marsoos,” Pakistan’s counter-terrorism strategy, and the role of regional actors in hybrid warfare.

Field Marshal Munir emphasized Pakistan’s role as a frontline nation in the global war on terror and the heavy sacrifices it has made — both in lives and resources — for regional and global peace.

He also promoted Pakistan’s untapped potential in technology, agriculture, and mining, inviting international investors to explore collaborative opportunities. “We seek partnerships that foster prosperity, not dependency,” he stated.

Participants praised the clarity and sincerity of the army chief’s remarks, calling the session one of the most direct and strategically significant dialogues in recent years between Pakistan and the US.

The COAS concluded by reaffirming Pakistan’s dedication to diplomacy, regional stability, and a rules-based international order.
