Monsoon Rains Expected in Karachi This Weekend, Urban Flooding Risk in Low-Lying Areas
Karachi – Monsoon rains are expected to hit Karachi this weekend, raising concerns about potential urban flooding in low-lying neighborhoods, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).
Private weather services, including MeteoGroup and AccuWeather, also forecast rain in the city during the weekend. The weather system is likely to bring strong winds and heavy downpours, with flood-prone areas such as Korangi, Lyari, and Saddar at heightened risk.
Other cities in Sindh, including Sukkur, Larkana, Jacobabad, and Hyderabad, are also likely to experience rainfall during the same period. The PMD warned of isolated thunderstorms across southern parts of the province.
In the days leading up to the weekend, Karachi will remain hot and humid, with partly cloudy skies and daytime temperatures ranging from 33°C to 36°C:
- Tuesday: 34°C–36°C
- Wednesday: 34°C–36°C
- Thursday: 33°C–35°C
The PMD explained that moist air currents from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal are currently affecting northern Pakistan, while a westerly wave is adding to atmospheric instability. The effects are expected to intensify by Wednesday, with rain and windstorms forecast in Kashmir, Upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Northeastern Punjab, and the Potohar region.
Heavy rainfall is expected in these areas, especially around Islamabad, increasing the risk of localized flooding and travel disruptions.
Over the past 24 hours, weather across Pakistan has remained hot and humid, with Sibbi, Turbat, and Jacobabad reporting extreme heat reaching up to 45°C. Light showers were recorded in parts of Punjab, with Jhang receiving 4mm and Sialkot 1mm of rain.
Authorities are advising residents in flood-prone areas to stay alert and follow safety instructions as the weekend approaches.
