Muharram moon sighted, Ashura to fall on July 6

Jun 27, 2025

ISLAMABAD:
The Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee has announced the sighting of the Muharram-ul-Haram moon for the new Islamic year 1447 AH, marking the start of the new Hijri year from Friday, June 27.

As per the official declaration, Ashura — the 10th of Muharram — will fall on Sunday, July 6, 2025.

The announcement was made by Committee Chairman Maulana Syed Muhammad Abdul Khabeer Azad, following a meeting held at the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Quetta.

The meeting was attended by representatives from the Pakistan Meteorological Department, SUPARCO, and other relevant authorities who confirmed the moon sighting based on both scientific data and testimonies from various regions.

Ashura holds deep religious significance for Muslims worldwide, particularly for Shia communities, as it marks the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), at the Battle of Karbala. In Pakistan, the day is observed with religious processions, prayers, and mourning rituals.

The government is expected to issue notifications regarding security arrangements, public holidays, and procession routes in the coming days as part of Ashura preparations.
