Tunisian Embassy Takes Custody of Abandoned Woman in Karachi

Jun 30, 2025

A 19-year-old Tunisian woman who had traveled to Karachi to marry a man from Lyari has been taken into protective custody by the Tunisian Embassy after being divorced and left stranded.

Sanda Ayari sought help from the Women Police Station in District Central after her husband ended the marriage and she was left without support. Her case gained attention after circulating on social media, prompting the Tunisian Embassy to intervene.

Authorities confirmed that Sanda’s visa had expired in February, leaving her with no legal status or means to return home. The embassy stepped in to assist, coordinating with local law enforcement and shifting her to Islamabad, where she is now under official diplomatic protection.

According to SHO Uzma Khan, Sanda had requested help obtaining an exit permit and arranging her return flight to Tunisia. The embassy has since taken full responsibility for her repatriation, which is expected to be completed within days.

This case highlights the vulnerabilities faced by foreign nationals caught in cross-border marriages and the crucial role diplomatic missions can play in ensuring their safety and repatriation.
