More than 900 earthquakes have been felt on a remote Japanese island in a week, causing panic among local residents.
The tremors have been recorded continuously since June 21 in a series of sparsely populated islands near the Tokara Islands, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.
No major damage has been reported from the quakes so far, but the Meteorological Department says it is currently unclear how long the tremors will continue.

Itaka Abita, head of the Meteorological Department’s Earthquake and Tsunami Division, said, “Seismic activity in the sea area around the Tokara Islands has increased unusually since June 21.”
An emergency press conference was held after the 5.5 magnitude earthquake struck at around 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
“As of 4 p.m. this evening (local time), the number of aftershocks has exceeded 900,” Abita said.
He warned locals to be prepared to seek shelter and evacuate the area in case of more severe earthquakes.
Residents of the Tokara Islands said that the constant tremors had left them sleepless nights and that they were suffering from extreme fatigue due to the constant mental stress.
“It feels like (everything) is constantly shaking. I feel scared even while sleeping.”
