TASHKENT / LAHORE – Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday called on Economic Cooperation Organisation (ECO) member states to enhance regional cooperation to tackle escalating climate challenges, geopolitical tensions, and economic instability.

Addressing the 17th ECO Summit, PM Shehbaz emphasized the urgency of collective efforts to combat the adverse effects of climate change, citing issues like melting glaciers, desertification, and food insecurity affecting millions across the region.

“Pakistan is among the top 10 most climate-vulnerable countries,” he stated, referencing the catastrophic 2022 floods that displaced over 33 million people in Pakistan and recent lives lost due to weather events. He outlined Pakistan’s 4F strategy focused on resilience, recovery, rehabilitation, and reconstruction.

He proposed the creation of low-emission corridors, a regional disaster resilience system, and increased climate finance mobilisation, alongside eco-tourism and clean energy projects to promote sustainable, inclusive development and green jobs for youth and women.

On geopolitical matters, the prime minister strongly condemned Israel’s recent airstrike on Iran, calling it “unlawful, unjustified, and unprovoked.” He extended condolences to the Iranian people and called for global accountability.

Shehbaz Sharif also denounced Indian aggression toward Pakistan following an incident in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), describing it as a deliberate provocation aimed at destabilizing regional peace. He praised Pakistan’s armed forces for their firm response and appreciated support from ECO member countries.

Further condemning Israel’s actions in Gaza, the prime minister reiterated Pakistan’s stand against oppression and violence, whether in Gaza, IIOJK, or Iran.

He accused India of the “weaponisation of water”, highlighting violations of the Indus Waters Treaty and citing a recent ruling by the Permanent Court of Arbitration. “The Indus waters are a lifeline for our 240 million people. India’s actions are an act of aggression,” he warned.

On the economic front, PM Shehbaz called for full implementation of the ECO Vision 2025, particularly the ECO Trade Agreement (ECOTA) and enhanced transport connectivity. He referenced ECO’s historic roots as the Regional Cooperation for Development (RCD) and called for renewed efforts toward integration.

He expressed gratitude to member states for selecting Lahore as the ECO Tourism Capital for 2027, inviting delegates to experience Pakistan’s cultural richness.

“Lahore will captivate all who visit. We look forward to welcoming our ECO brothers and sisters,” he concluded.
