US-Colombia relations deteriorate, ambassadors recalled
The United States and Colombia have recalled their ambassadors due to diplomatic tensions.
According to the news agency, relations in Colombia deteriorated over an alleged conspiracy against President Petro, after which both countries recalled their ambassadors.
The US State Department says that it has responded to the Colombian government’s baseless and condemnable statements, is concerned about the current state of relations, and further steps are being considered.
Colombia’s foreign minister also resigned over the differences. She said recent decisions by President Petro were personal and against principles.
Colombian prosecutors have opened an investigation into an alleged coup plot against President Petro. In January, the United States suspended consular services for blocking the return of Colombian refugees.
Both countries have also threatened to impose tariffs of up to 50 percent on each other. Colombia has also refused to extradite two rebel leaders wanted by the United States.
