Punjab Assembly Speaker Begins Disqualification Proceedings Against 26 Suspended PTI MPAs
LAHORE – July 10: Punjab Assembly Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmed Khan has begun formal proceedings on disqualification references filed against 26 suspended MPAs of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), as per Articles 63(2) and 113 of the Constitution, 24NewsHDTV reported Wednesday.
According to the Punjab Assembly Secretariat, the Speaker has summoned the suspended lawmakers for a personal hearing on Thursday (July 11) at 11:00 am in his chamber.
The Speaker’s Office confirmed that the proceedings will be conducted in strict adherence to Article 10A, which guarantees the right to a fair trial. Speaker Malik Ahmed Khan reiterated his commitment to ensuring each member is given an equal and full opportunity to defend themselves within the constitutional framework.
“Each MPA named in the references will be given a personal hearing and the right to submit their defense,” said the Speaker in an official statement.
Under constitutional provisions, the Speaker is obligated to decide on the disqualification references within 30 days from the date of receiving them. The references reportedly stem from violations of party discipline and defection allegations, which can lead to termination of membership.
The outcome of these hearings could have significant political implications for the composition of the Punjab Assembly, as PTI continues to navigate legal and institutional challenges.
