NDMA Issues Alert for Heavy Rains, Landslides in Northern Areas and Kashmir
Islamabad – July 11, 2025: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a high-alert advisory for heavy rainfall and potential landslides in northern Pakistan and Azad Jammu & Kashmir (AJK). The warning comes amid weather forecasts predicting intense monsoon activity in the coming days.
According to the NDMA, Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir are most at risk, with specific danger zones identified in:
Gilgit, Skardu, Hunza, Astore, Diamer, Ghanche, and Shigar
Muzaffarabad, Neelum Valley, Rawalakot, Haveli, and Bagh
In addition to widespread rainfall, landslides and mudslides are anticipated in several locations due to unstable terrain and saturated soil conditions.
Danger Zones Identified
The NDMA alert highlights:
Upper Kohistan (RD 200–240)
Diamer to Astore stretch (RD 340–380)
Gilgit Road (RD 400) and Nagar Road (RD 460)
Multiple points on the Karakoram Highway (KKH)
Jaglot–Skardu Road (JSR), especially near Rondo
The risk level in these areas remains high due to previous land erosion and ongoing rainfall.
Precautionary Measures Urged
The NDMA has advised the public, especially travelers and tourists, to exercise caution and avoid non-essential travel in these vulnerable regions. Local administrations have been directed to:
Keep road-clearing machinery on standby
Monitor vulnerable slopes and water levels
Ensure timely evacuation if necessary
“All concerned authorities must remain on high alert and prepare for emergency response,” the NDMA stressed in its advisory.
Authorities are working in coordination with local disaster management units to minimize disruption and ensure swift restoration of any affected routes.
Tourists visiting northern regions during the monsoon season have been urged to stay updated with official advisories and weather updates before planning their trips.
