LESCO Consumers at Risk of Missing Rs3 Billion Electricity Subsidy This Month

Jul 13, 2025

Lahore – July 14, 2025: Millions of LESCO (Lahore Electric Supply Company) consumers may miss out on Rs3 billion in electricity bill subsidies this month due to delays in federal government approval, according to sources within the utility provider.

The Ministry of Power Division has not yet cleared the subsidy case, which was due to be submitted by the 6th of the month. As a result, bills are being printed without the relief that many low-income consumers—particularly those falling in badge categories 1 and 2—typically receive.

“We’ll resubmit the case on Monday,” a senior LESCO official stated. “But if the approval doesn’t come through in time, the bills will go out without subsidy adjustments.”

Millions to Bear Full Charges Without Relief
This development has caused concern among consumers already grappling with rising inflation and high electricity costs. Without the Rs3 billion federal subsidy, eligible households may be forced to pay full charges, further straining household budgets.

Awaiting Final Approval
LESCO officials confirmed they are on standby, awaiting a green light from the Ministry to reprocess or adjust bills. However, the printing process is time-sensitive, making it unlikely the adjustment can be made if approval is delayed any further.

Consumer Advocacy Grows
Consumer rights groups have voiced alarm, urging the government to prioritize subsidy approvals in a timely manner to avoid unnecessary burden on lower-income citizens.

This potential lapse highlights systemic inefficiencies in the subsidy approval process and calls for more streamlined coordination between DISCOs and federal departments.
