Australia Reels at 99-6 as Joseph Leads West Indies Fightback in Pink-Ball Thriller
JAMAICA – The West Indies mounted a fierce comeback on Day 2 of the day-night Test at Sabina Park, reducing Australia to 99-6 in their second innings, with a narrow lead of 181 runs. The match now hangs delicately in the balance, as both teams battle for control under the challenging conditions of pink-ball cricket.
Shamar Joseph and Alzarri Joseph delivered a relentless pace assault under the lights, making life miserable for Australia’s batters. Shamar struck early, removing openers Sam Konstas (0) and Usman Khawaja (14), taking his series tally to an astonishing 20 wickets.
Alzarri then dismantled the middle order, dismissing Steve Smith (5), Beau Webster (13), and Alex Carey (0), leaving Australia in tatters at the close of play.
“We were looking for seven wickets tonight and got six, so we’ll take that,” said Shamar Joseph. “This generation wants to continue the West Indies’ great legacy of fast bowling.”
The only resistance came from Cameron Green, who remained unbeaten on 42, while captain Pat Cummins survived to stumps on 5*. Their partnership will be crucial on Day 3 if Australia hopes to build a defendable lead beyond 200.
Earlier in the day, the West Indies were bowled out for 143, just trailing Australia’s first-innings 225 by 82 runs. They collapsed from 82-3 to 143 all out, thanks to tight spells from Scott Boland (3-34), Josh Hazlewood, and Cummins, who shared key breakthroughs.
Australia’s bowlers capitalized on a seamer-friendly surface, and despite two missed chances from keeper Alex Carey, the hosts were unable to capitalise. Their downfall included poor shot selection, a run-out of Justin Greaves, and little resistance from the lower order.
The match’s momentum shifted rapidly in the final session, as Australia crumbled once again under lights — just as the West Indies had on Day 1.
A clean sweep is still within Australia’s reach following earlier wins in Barbados and Grenada, but the West Indies have shown their fight and could yet pull off a remarkable win if they dismiss Australia early on Day 3.
