Cameroon: President announces strong fight for eight terms at the beginning of 92
Cameroon’s 92-year-old President Paul Biya has announced his intention to run for an eighth consecutive term.
Cameroon’s second president since independence from France in 1960, Paul Biya, has been in power since 1982 and is currently the world’s oldest head of state.
The Cameroonian president said in a message on social media that his commitment to serving the people is in line with the serious challenges facing the country.
The Cameroonian president abolished presidential term limits through constitutional amendments in 2008 and controversially won in 2018 with 71% of the vote.
Several opposition leaders have also announced their intention to run against Paul Biya in the October 12 elections.
