UK Lifts Ban on Pakistani Airlines After Major Safety Reforms

Jul 16, 2025

London/Islamabad – July 16, 2025: In a major development for Pakistan’s aviation industry, the United Kingdom has officially lifted its ban on Pakistani airlines, recognizing the significant progress made in aviation safety and regulatory reforms.

The British High Commission confirmed that the UK Air Safety Committee has removed Pakistan from its air safety concern list following a comprehensive assessment of improvements in Pakistan’s aviation oversight.

This decision allows Pakistani carriers to once again apply for flight operations to the UK. However, airlines will still need to obtain final operational clearance from the UK’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) before commercial flights can resume.

The British High Commissioner to Pakistan commended the efforts of both British and Pakistani aviation experts, noting that the successful cooperation demonstrated a shared commitment to global air safety. He also expressed personal excitement over the prospect of flying on a Pakistani airline in the near future.

This long-anticipated move is expected to reopen direct air routes between Pakistan and the UK, restoring convenience for passengers and enhancing trade, tourism, and bilateral ties. Aviation analysts see this as a much-needed boost to Pakistan’s struggling aviation sector, especially in light of upcoming reforms and privatisation efforts.

Government Reaction: A Milestone Moment

Federal Minister for Aviation Khawaja Asif hailed the UK’s decision as a “major milestone” for Pakistan’s aviation recovery. Speaking at a press conference reported by 24NewsHD, he criticized the former PTI government, claiming that an “irresponsible statement” by a past PTI minister led to the suspension of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flights to Europe and the UK.

“That one careless remark cost the nation billions and severely tarnished our international aviation reputation,” said Asif. He added that the government now intends to restore PIA’s international routes before proceeding with its privatisation plan.

“With the UK ban lifted, PIA’s market value will rise significantly, paving the way for a smoother, more beneficial privatisation process,” he stated.

The restoration of Pakistan’s aviation credibility marks a turning point in the country’s efforts to re-establish itself as a trusted player in international air travel.
