
DPM Ishaq Dar reaches Washington for key meeting with US Secretary of State Rubio
ISLAMABAD: Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar has arrived in Washington, D.C. to hold a key meeting US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Dar was received by Ambassador of Pakistan to the US, Rizwan Saeed Sheikh and senior embassy officials at the airport.
The meeting will discuss important facets of Pak-US relations exploring ways and means to strengthen bilateral ties, with a particular focus on promoting trade, investment and economic cooperation.
The deputy prime minister is also scheduled to speak at the US think tank, The Atlantic Council, sharing Pakistan’s perspective on regional and global issues as well as the future of Pak-US relations.
A day earlier, Dar said cooperation between the United Nations and regional organisations such as the Organisation of Islamic Countries (OIC) is indispensable.
He was presiding over a meeting of the UN Security Council on cooperation between the two world bodies on Thursday.
DPM Dar said that the cooperation between the United Nations and the OIC is firmly based on Chapter VIII of the UN Charter, which highlights the significance of regional arrangements in supporting the Security Council’s primary responsibility for maintaining international peace and security.
“The OIC has consistently served as a bridge, connecting the global with regional efforts, and aligning political with the humanitarian priorities,” Dar said.
He added that OIC has been an indispensable interlocutor for the United Nations, also deeply attached to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter.
Earlier, Ishaq Dar has urged the UN Security Council to pursue an immediate, permanent and unconditional ceasefire in Gaza and across the occupied Palestinian territory.
He was speaking at the United Nations Security Council’s open debate on the Middle East on Wednesday.
The deputy prime minister said that immediate steps should be taken to ensure the delivery of life-saving food and medical assistance, restore humanitarian supply lines, and prevent famine conditions in Gaza.
