Malaysia: Protests against Prime Minister: Demand for resignation

Jul 27, 2025

Kuala Lumpur: Thousands of people marched in the Malaysian capital to protest Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, calling for his resignation.

The demonstration was against rising prices, new taxes, changes to subsidies, and the failure to fulfill election promises.
Police said about 18,000 protesters took part in the march, which passed through the city center and ended at Azadi Square, where opposition leaders addressed the crowd.

The protesters chanted “Anwar resign,” while many groups, including young students, expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s economic policies. Noor Shahira, a 23-year-old student, said the new taxes and additional electricity tariffs would make everyday items more expensive.
Anwar Ibrahim is also facing accusations of interfering in the judiciary and protecting corrupt allies. Former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, who recently turned 100, also joined the demonstration and accused Anwar of abusing political power.
It should be noted that Anwar and Mahathir came to power together in 2018, but the alliance quickly fell apart. Anwar has also announced a few measures against inflation in recent days, but public anger does not seem to be abating.
