Six Killed in Temple Stampede at Mansa Devi Shrine in Uttarakhand, India
Haridwar, India – July 27, 2025:
A tragic stampede at the Mansa Devi temple in Haridwar, located in northern India’s Uttarakhand state, claimed the lives of six worshippers and left more than 10 others injured on Sunday, officials confirmed.
The incident occurred on a narrow stairway leading to the temple, which sits along the sacred Ganges River and draws thousands of Hindu devotees daily. A sudden crowd surge reportedly triggered the chaos.
“Six dead and more than 10 injured are admitted to the hospital,” said Senior Police Official Parmendra Dobhal, speaking to AFP.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami announced that relief and rescue operations were in full swing.
“I am in constant contact with local authorities, and continuous monitoring of the situation is underway,” he said in an official statement.
Stampedes during religious gatherings remain a persistent and deadly issue in India, often caused by poor crowd control at overcrowded venues.
This incident follows a string of similar tragedies:
June 2025: A crowd crush at a Hindu festival in Odisha killed three and injured several others.
May 2025: Six people were crushed to death during a fire-walking ritual in Goa.
January 2025: Over 30 fatalities were reported during a stampede at the Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj.
Authorities are expected to launch an inquiry into the latest tragedy to determine accountability and improve crowd safety at religious sites.
