Michigan Church Shooting Leaves 1 Dead, 9 Injured; Suspect Killed in Gunfight
Grand Blanc, Michigan – September 29, 2025:
A gunman rammed his vehicle into a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc on Sunday before opening fire on worshippers, killing one person and injuring at least nine others, police said.
Grand Blanc Police Chief William Renye confirmed that the attacker, a 40-year-old man from Burton, Michigan, stormed into the church with an assault-style weapon as hundreds of people gathered inside. The vehicle crash ignited a blaze, forcing firefighters to battle both flames and chaos as terrified congregants fled the scene.
The suspect was killed during an exchange of gunfire with responding officers, Renye said. Authorities warned that more victims could be found inside the charred building once it is safe to enter.
Footage circulating on social media showed thick smoke billowing from the church as emergency crews struggled to contain the fire.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer called the tragedy “unacceptable,” adding: “Violence anywhere, especially in a place of worship, is heartbreaking.”
US Attorney General Pam Bondi described the shooting as “chilling,” while President Donald Trump said it appeared to be “a targeted attack on Christians in America,” pledging full federal support as the FBI joined the investigation.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, also known as the Mormon church, has a long-standing presence in the US. Grand Blanc, where the attack occurred, is a town of around 7,700 residents, located 60 miles northwest of Detroit.
