Leonardo DiCaprio amplifies environmental advocacy ahead of COP30 climate summit in Brazil
(Web News)Leonardo DiCaprio is ramping up his long-standing environmental activism as the world gears up for the COP30 global climate summit in Brazil.
The 50-year-old Academy Award-winning actor urged political and business leaders to prioritize environmental preservation in a video shared on Instagram alongside the Austin-based nonprofit Re:wild.
“This week, world leaders gather in Brazil for the first global climate summit held in the heart of the rainforest,” DiCaprio said. “Brazil is home to 60% of the Amazon, the lungs of the earth, and one of the planet’s vital life support systems. Yet this irreplaceable ecosystem – like many others – is in peril.”
The actor highlighted the devastating impact of deforestation, noting that “in the past four decades, 95 percent of Amazon deforestation was driven by animal agriculture, cutting and burning ancient forests for pasture and feed.” He warned that industry-fueled destruction not only fuels droughts and illegal fires but accelerates a dangerous cycle affecting the entire planet.
DiCaprio, known for roles in Titanic, The Wolf of Wall Street, and Don’t Look Up, emphasized the broader consequences of environmental neglect. “In my lifetime alone, humans have lost over 400 million acres of forest and 70 percent of wildlife populations,” he said.
