One Dead in Underground Mine Collapse in Saskatchewan

Esterhazy, Sask. : One person has died after sustaining injuries in an underground mining collapse at the K3 mine in Esterhazy, Saskatchewan, the Mosaic Company confirmed Monday.

In a statement, Mosaic said the incident occurred at the K3 underground mine, located about 90 kilometres southeast of Yorkton. The identity of the deceased has not been released, and no other injuries were reported.

Mosaic’s emergency response team was immediately dispatched to the site following the collapse. The company said the affected area has since been secured and all mining operations have been halted.

The cause of the collapse, the extent of the damage and the specific location within the mine have not yet been disclosed. Mosaic said a full investigation is underway and that it is cooperating closely with all relevant regulatory authorities.

Support services are being provided to employees and others impacted by the incident.

“Our thoughts go out to our colleague’s family and friends, all employees, and the broader community,” the company said, adding that it has requested privacy for the family during this difficult time.
