Final XI for second test against South Africa to be decided after pitch inspection: Azhar Mahmood
RAWALPINDI:Pakistan cricket team’s head coach Azhar Mahmood said on Saturday that the side will finalize its lineup for the second Test against South Africa after taking a closer look at the pitch.
Speaking at a press conference in Rawalpindi, Mahmood said, “The pitch here is different from the ones we had against the West Indies. Even if we lose the toss, our goal is to post 350-plus runs in the first innings.”
He explained that the training camp before the series was set up to help players handle spin better. “We must learn to play spin on such surfaces. If we make turning pitches, our batters should know how to handle them,” he added.
Talking about the batters’ performance in the first Test, Mahmood noted that all seven top-order players contributed. “Four made runs in the first innings and three in the second. Everyone played their part, but our lower order couldn’t chip in. We expect them to score as well because tail-end runs can make a big difference, South Africa’s last four batters added 90 runs.”
On the team combination, Mahmood hinted at a possible ‘three-one’ setup, three spinners and one fast bowler. “People criticized us for playing two pacers in Lahore, but that pitch also helped batters. We’ll pick our attack based on conditions.”
The head coach stressed that Pakistan’s home season of six Test matches is crucial for their World Test Championship campaign. “The team’s morale is sky-high, the boys are gelling well, and everyone is focused on winning. That’s what matters most,” he said.
Addressing social media criticism, Mahmood clarified that his earlier remarks about spinners were misinterpreted. “I never said Pakistan lacks quality spinners. I only mentioned that we didn’t have enough options on the Bangladesh tour. I can name ten spinners with bright futures,” he said with confidence.
Meanwhile, South Africa’s captain Aiden Markram told reporters that his side has already devised a plan to counter Pakistani spinners Nauman Ali and Sajid Khan. “We discussed them in team meetings and have trained hard to handle them. We’re eager to bounce back and level the series,” he added.
Markram acknowledged that local conditions are always challenging but expressed hope for an exciting contest. “We’ve had a good look at the pitch. Playing here is always a test of skill, but we’re ready to give it our all. Fans can expect some quality cricket,” he said.
