Liverpool’s Wirtz Breaks Goal Drought, Manager Slot Predicts Many More
LIVERPOOL: Florian Wirtz scored his first Premier League goal for Liverpool in the 2-1 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers, and manager Arne Slot says the German midfielder is just getting started.
Wirtz, 22, joined Liverpool in June for a reported £100 million ($135 million), with potential bonuses adding another £16 million. Before Saturday’s match, he had failed to score in over 20 appearances for the club.
“It was a relief for him, and you could see that in his reaction and his teammates’ response,” Slot told reporters. “In football, players are often judged on goals and assists, but there’s so much more to a game. Florian’s performances have been strong even if the stats didn’t show it.”
Slot praised Wirtz’s continued improvement, fitness, and contributions beyond scoring. “He gets better every game, and today’s goal was a result of that progress. One goal is not enough, but I’m confident he will score many more for us,” he added.
Liverpool, currently fourth in the Premier League, will face 16th-placed Leeds United in their next match on January 1.
