LONDON: Manchester United have sacked head coach Ruben Amorim, the Premier League club announced on Monday, a day after being held to a draw by relegation-threatened Leeds United.
In a statement, the club said the decision was taken “reluctantly” but believed to be necessary to give the team “the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish.” United currently sit sixth in the table, 17 points adrift of leaders Arsenal, and have won just one of their last five matches.
The move follows growing scrutiny over Amorim’s position, which intensified after Sunday’s draw. The Portuguese coach had bristled at questions about his job security, insisting he arrived at Old Trafford with full managerial authority rather than simply as a coach.
Amorim appeared downbeat earlier when discussing transfers and later delivered a sharp rebuke to reporters, accusing them of relying on “selective information” while forcefully defending his role.
The 40-year-old made clear he had no intention of resigning, repeatedly stressing his authority over team affairs before the club opted to make a change.
