Washington : Offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury and defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. are no longer part of head coach Dan Quinn’s staff with the Washington Commanders following a disappointing 5-12 season, a team official with knowledge of the decisions told The Associated Press on Tuesday.
The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the staff changes had not yet been formally announced.
Kingsbury and Whitt both joined the Commanders alongside Quinn ahead of the 2024 season. Kingsbury oversaw the offense, while Whitt initially handled defensive play-calling duties before being relieved of that responsibility during the season.
According to the source, Quinn and Kingsbury met Tuesday morning to discuss the future of Washington’s offense, which is built around quarterback Jayden Daniels. Following the meeting, the two mutually agreed to part ways.
Whitt was dismissed outright, a move that came as little surprise given his earlier demotion and the struggles of Washington’s defense. The Commanders finished the season allowing more yards than any other team in the NFL.
In another coaching change, offensive line coach Bobby Johnson has also been let go.
The moves come just two days after the Commanders’ season ended, marking a sharp decline from a year earlier. Quinn’s first season in Washington saw the team post a 12-5 regular-season record, reach the NFC Championship Game, and witness Daniels earn AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year honors as the No. 2 overall draft pick.
