OTTAWA : Prime Minister Mark Carney met with Canada’s provincial premiers today in Ottawa, emphasizing the need to “come together and build” as the country faces discussions around potential independence referendums.
The meeting follows reports that Alberta separatists met with officials from the U.S. Trump administration. Carney stressed that the United States is expected to always “respect Canadian sovereignty.”
The first ministers’ meeting comes at a time when both Quebec and Alberta are debating the possibility of holding independence referendums. Quebec’s outgoing premier stated that while most Quebecers do not favor separation, the decision ultimately rests with the citizens of the province.
