Indian Wells – The fourth round of the BNP Paribas Open is set for a marquee showdown as world number one Aryna Sabalenka and former champion Naomi Osaka both secured victories on Sunday, setting the stage for a blockbuster meeting.
The day’s action, however, was overshadowed by a concerning injury to fourth-ranked American Coco Gauff, who was forced to retire from her match against the Philippines’ Alexandra Eala.
Sabalenka Powers Through
Sabalenka, chasing her first title at the prestigious ATP and WTA Masters 1000 event after two runner-up finishes, was in dominant form. She powered past Romania’s Jaqueline Cristian 6-4, 6-1, firing 23 winners in a commanding performance.
“So many things I felt like I did great today,” Sabalenka said. “Serving well, happy with the way I stayed focused no matter what (and) of course happy with the win.”
Osaka’s Resilience
Sixteen seed Osaka, playing her first tournament since withdrawing from the Australian Open with an abdominal injury, showed grit to overcome Camila Osorio 6-1, 3-6, 6-1, avenging a first-round loss to the Colombian last year.
After losing her way in the second set, Osaka made a conscious attitude adjustment. “I feel like the second set I was complaining a lot and then I just kind of thought my daughter could be watching me mope around the court,” she explained. “So I needed to pick up my attitude and that’s kind of what I did in the third.”
The win sets up a highly anticipated clash with Sabalenka. Their only previous meeting came in 2018, when Osaka won en route to her first US Open title.
“I’ll have a chance to get a revenge, hopefully,” Sabalenka said.
Gauff’s Scary Injury
The day’s most worrying moment came when Coco Gauff retired from her third-round match against Alexandra Eala due to a left arm injury. Gauff was trailing 6-2, 2-0 when she called it quits after 54 minutes.
Gauff described the sensation as frightening. “It felt like a firework going off inside of my arm, and then my whole arm felt like it was on fire,” she said. “And as the match played, it got progressively worse, even on shots that I wasn’t even using my left arm for … it was a scary feeling.”
Eala, backed by a passionate contingent of Filipino fans, was magnanimous in victory. “I really didn’t want to win this way,” she said. “But this is still a really big moment for me.”
