FM Dar Congratulates Five Nations Elected to UN Security Council

ISLAMABAD: Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar on Thursday congratulated five countries elected as non-permanent members of the United Nations Security Council for the 2027–2028 term, reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to international peace, security, and multilateral cooperation.

In a message shared on X, Dar extended congratulations to Austria, Kyrgyzstan, Portugal, Trinidad and Tobago, and Zimbabwe following their successful election to the 15-member UN Security Council.

“Congratulations to Austria, Kyrgyzstan, Portugal, Trinidad and Tobago, and Zimbabwe on their election as non-permanent members of the UNSC for the 2027–2028 term. We wish them every success in fulfilling this important responsibility,” Dar wrote.

Pakistan Reaffirms Commitment to Global Peace

The foreign minister emphasized that Pakistan, which is currently serving as a non-permanent member of the Security Council until the end of 2026, remains dedicated to promoting international peace, security, dialogue, and cooperation among nations.

Dar expressed optimism about working closely with the newly elected members to advance common objectives and strengthen the effectiveness of the United Nations system.

“Pakistan looks forward to working closely with the incoming members to advance shared goals and contribute towards a more peaceful, secure, and equitable world,” he said.

UN General Assembly Elects New Members

The elections were held at the United Nations General Assembly, where member states selected five countries to serve two-year terms beginning on January 1, 2027.

The newly elected members will replace outgoing countries whose terms conclude at the end of 2026.

The Security Council consists of:

  • Five permanent members with veto power:
    • United States
    • China
    • Russia
    • France
    • United Kingdom
  • Ten non-permanent members elected for two-year terms.

The Council is responsible for maintaining international peace and security and has the authority to impose sanctions, authorize peacekeeping missions, and approve the use of force under international law.

Pakistan’s Role on the Security Council

Pakistan secured its current seat on the Security Council in June 2024 after receiving overwhelming support from the UN General Assembly.

The country won 182 votes out of 193 member states, significantly exceeding the two-thirds majority required for election.

Since joining the Council, Pakistan has advocated for:

  • Peaceful resolution of conflicts
  • Respect for international law
  • Strengthening multilateral diplomacy
  • Reform of global governance institutions
  • Protection of developing countries’ interests

Continuing Members Through 2027

The following countries will continue serving on the Security Council through the end of 2027:

  • Bahrain
  • Colombia
  • Democratic Republic of the Congo
  • Latvia
  • Liberia

Strengthening Multilateral Cooperation

Analysts view the election of the new members as an opportunity to strengthen representation from different regions of the world and enhance international cooperation on global challenges, including conflict resolution, climate security, terrorism, and sustainable development.

Pakistan has reiterated its intention to continue working constructively with all Security Council members to support peace, stability, and development worldwide.
