‘World Sindhi Congress delegation presented case of Sindh in the UNPO Conference “Reimagining Self-Determination” in Madeira, Portugal’
World Sindhi Congress proudly participated in the UNPO “Reimagining Self-Determination” Conference, being held from 9–11 May 2025 in Madeira, Portugal. This landmark event brought together communities, scholars, policymakers, and human rights advocates to reaffirm and reframe the global conversation on the right to self-determination in an era marked by rising authoritarianism, cultural erasure, climate crises, and geopolitical instability.
WSC, a longstanding member of the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organisation (UNPO), continues to represent Sindh as a distinct nation seeking recognition, justice, and autonomy. We are honoured that Dr. Lakhu Luhana, Chairperson of WSC, delivered a powerful speech at the conference highlighting the Sindhi people’s continued struggle against state oppression, land dispossession, and the denial of cultural and political rights. His address underscored the urgency of acknowledging Sindh’s historical identity and its right to determine its own political future.

Farhan Kaghzi, representing the new generation of Sindhi advocates, played a key role as a moderator in a roundtable discussion focused on resisting new and old forms of colonialism, including the impact of political power and technological influence on unrepresented peoples. His engagement reflects WSC’s commitment to inclusive dialogue and strategic solidarity across nations and movements.

The conference was inaugurated with an inspiring speech by Dr. Rubina Greenwood, current President of UNPO and former Chairperson of the World Sindhi Congress. Her leadership and vision reaffirmed UNPO’s foundational principles, emphasising that self-determination is not a destabilising force, but rather a path to peace, inclusion, and resilience.

The “Reimagining Self-Determination” Conference renewed our shared conviction that the rights of unrepresented nations must remain central in global debates. WSC extends its heartfelt appreciation to UNPO, the conference organisers, and fellow members for fostering a space of solidarity and strategic planning for a just and self-determined future.
