Govt Declares Public Holiday on Youm-e-Takbir in Balochistan: All You Need to Know

QUETTA, May 25 — The Balochistan government has announced a public holiday on May 28 (Tuesday) to commemorate Youm-e-Takbir, a national day marking Pakistan’s historic entry into the nuclear club.

According to a formal notification by the Services and General Administration Department (S&GAD), all public and private sector offices across the province will remain closed on the occasion.

What Is Youm-e-Takbir?

Youm-e-Takbir, observed annually on May 28, commemorates the day in 1998 when Pakistan successfully conducted its first nuclear tests in the Chagai Hills of Balochistan.

These tests officially established Pakistan as the seventh nuclear power in the world — and the first Islamic country to possess nuclear weapons.

Historical Context

  • The roots of Pakistan’s nuclear program date back to the 1970s, following India’s first nuclear test in 1974.
  • Then-Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto initiated efforts to ensure Pakistan’s defense capabilities.
  • Visionary scientists, notably Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan, played a pivotal role under the guidance of the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC).

Despite heavy international pressure and economic sanctions, Pakistan remained steadfast in its pursuit of nuclear deterrence.

In direct response to India’s nuclear tests on May 11 and 13, 1998, Pakistan conducted its own tests on May 28 and May 30, restoring the strategic balance in South Asia.

Symbol of National Unity and Scientific Achievement

Youm-e-Takbir is more than just a historical milestone — it is a symbol of Pakistan’s scientific progress, national pride, and commitment to sovereignty.

Every year, the day is marked with:

  • Government ceremonies
  • Special media broadcasts
  • Tributes to the scientists and leaders who contributed to the nation’s defense capabilities

What the Holiday Means

  • All government offices, private businesses, banks, and educational institutions in Balochistan will be closed on Tuesday, May 28.
  • Citizens are advised to complete any essential work beforehand.
  • Special Youm-e-Takbir events may be held across the province to honour the significance of the day.
