Romanian Blouse Day Celebrated for the First Time in Pakistan
ISLAMABAD:
In a unique cultural exchange, the Embassy of Romania in Islamabad hosted its first-ever celebration of the International Day of the Romanian Blouse on June 24, uniting members of the Romanian community, diplomats, and prominent Pakistani guests.
The event paid tribute to the iconic Romanian blouse, or ie, a traditional hand-embroidered garment that symbolizes national identity and artistic heritage. The celebration fostered cross-cultural appreciation and friendship, emphasizing the universal language of folk art.
Attendees were encouraged to wear traditional attire not only from Romania but also from their own cultures, promoting diversity and intercultural harmony.
The event featured an exhibition of authentic Romanian blouses—many handcrafted and passed down through generations—alongside traditional Romanian music and cuisine. Guests enjoyed Romanian culinary specialties and beverages, offering them a taste of the country’s rural warmth and hospitality.
In his address, Ambassador Dan Stoenescu remarked, “The Romanian blouse is not just clothing—it’s a cultural emblem, a link between generations, and a celebration of women’s artistry and strength. Sharing this in Islamabad deepens our cultural bond with Pakistan and the broader international community.”
The International Day of the Romanian Blouse coincides annually with Sânziene, an ancient midsummer Romanian tradition rooted in folklore. Initiated by the La Blouse Roumaine movement, the celebration has grown internationally, with events held in cities throughout Europe, the Americas, and Asia.
With this event, Pakistan joins the list of countries recognizing and celebrating the Romanian ie, marking a new chapter in the cultural dialogue between Romania and Pakistan.
