Major change during the war in Ukraine: Appointment of the first female Prime Minister
KYIV: Ukraine’s parliament has appointed Yulia Sviridenko as the new prime minister amid the ongoing Russian war in the country.
Yulia Sviridenko, 49, previously served as deputy prime minister. Her appointment is aimed at improving the government’s ability to handle war situations and boosting the local defense industry.
President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed expectations that the new government will increase the share of local weapons on the battlefield to 50 percent in the next six months. He also spoke of increasing cooperation with allied countries and relaxing regulations to support the economy.
Yulia wrote on X (formerly Twitter) that her government would act quickly, focusing in particular on supplying military equipment, increasing defense production, and improving technology.
Former Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal has been appointed as the new Defense Minister, while other key government positions have also been reshuffled. Ukraine is also currently facing financial difficulties and could face a budget deficit of about $19 billion next year.
Prime Minister Yulia has announced a full audit of financial affairs and large-scale privatization.
