Thailand: Martial law imposed in 8 border districts

Jul 25, 2025

Bangkok: The Thai government has imposed martial law in eight border districts amid rising security threats and concerns over cross-border insurgent activity. The announcement was made by military officials citing the need to maintain law and order in sensitive regions near the country’s southern border.

The areas placed under martial law are located in provinces where separatist tensions and smuggling operations have previously caused unrest. Under martial law, military authorities now have extended powers to arrest suspects, conduct searches without warrants, impose curfews, and restrict gatherings.

According to the Thai Army spokesperson, the decision was made in response to “credible intelligence” regarding potential militant movements and threats to national security. “The safety of our citizens is our top priority,” the spokesperson stated.

Human rights organizations have expressed concern over the move, urging the Thai government to ensure that civil liberties and due process are not violated under the emergency measures.

The duration of martial law remains unclear, though officials indicated it would be in effect until the threat level is reduced.
