Bangladesh’s interim leader Muhammad Yunus has announced that general elections in the country will be held in February 2026.
According to the international news agency, this was announced on the day of the completion of one year since the fall of the government of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The head of the interim government, Muhammad Yunus, said in an address to the nation that on behalf of the interim government, he would write a formal letter to the Chief Election Commissioner.

He added that the letter would request that the elections be held in February 2026 before Ramadan, which was supposed to be held in April.
Muhammad Yunus added that the Election Commission will determine the final date, but after his speech, he is entering the most important phase of the “transition of power.”

The interim head added that I request all of you to pray that we can hold free, transparent and peaceful elections so that all citizens can play their role in building a “new Bangladesh.”
Senior leaders of major political parties were also present at the address of Chief Muhammad Yunus, where he announced a roadmap for national unity, democratic reforms and inclusive governance.

It should be remembered that earlier, Interim Chief Muhammad Yunus had proposed holding elections in April 2026, however, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and other parties demanded that the elections be held in February, before Ramadan.
