Hamas Confirms Death of Spokesperson Abu Obeida Months After Israeli Strike
GAZA: Hamas’s armed wing, the Ezzedine Al-Qassam Brigades, confirmed on Monday the death of its spokesperson Abu Obeida, months after Israel announced he had been killed in an air strike on August 30.
In a video statement on its Telegram channel, the group paid tribute to “the masked man loved by millions … the great martyred commander and spokesperson of the Qassam Brigades, Abu Obeida.” A new masked figure in the video said he would carry on Abu Obeida’s name for future communications.
Abu Obeida, born Hudhayfa Samir al-Kahlout on February 11, 1985, in Jabalia refugee camp, northern Gaza, had joined Hamas at a young age and became the sole spokesman of the Qassam Brigades. Known for delivering statements in military uniform with his face covered by a red keffiyeh, he had survived multiple Israeli assassination attempts.
During the conflict triggered by Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attack on Israel, Abu Obeida became a central figure for Palestinians and international media, particularly regarding prisoner-exchange operations. Hamas officials described him as embodying “resistance” and praised his fiery and impactful speeches, which often included threats against Israel or announcements of military operations.
The video also confirmed the deaths of four other Hamas commanders killed in Israeli attacks during the ongoing war, reflecting Israel’s intensified campaign to decimate Hamas leadership.
Hamas’s announcement underscores the group’s effort to maintain continuity in its communications despite sustained losses amid the conflict.
