NDMA Warns of Flooding Across Pakistan as Heavy Rains Continue

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a comprehensive flood warning for various parts of Pakistan, citing heavy rainfall across the country from July 6 to July 10. The warning covers a wide geographic area, including the provinces of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Balochistan, and Sindh, where intense downpours may trigger flooding in major rivers and low-lying areas.

The NDMA cautioned that rivers such as the Indus, Chenab, Jhelum, Kabul, Swat, Panjkora, Chitral, and Hunza are likely to see a significant rise in water levels. Additionally, streams originating from the Kirthar mountain range in southern Balochistan are expected to swell, potentially leading to flood-like conditions in nearby areas.

In Khyber district, the town of Barra was hit by heavy rain and strong winds, causing a surge in the Barra River due to increased water inflow from the Tirah Valley. Meanwhile, Karachi experienced light showers in multiple areas, including DHA-I, Akhtar Colony, Kala Pul, Burns Road, and the vicinity of Sindh High Court, bringing a momentary respite from humid conditions.

Upper Sindh districts such as Daharki and Ubauro also reported intense rainfall, which submerged roads and inundated low-lying areas. Local power outages followed the storm, and many neighborhoods remained without electricity for hours.

In the Haripur district, particularly in the remote Ghazi tehsil, landslides following torrential rain blocked roads and isolated several villages. With official rescue operations delayed for more than two days, residents were left to clear blocked routes themselves.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department forecasts more rain accompanied by gusty winds across various regions over the next 24 hours. Kashmir, KP, upper and central Punjab including the Potohar region, and northern Balochistan are at high risk for heavy to very heavy rain, raising concerns over flash floods and landslides.

Local authorities have been urged to remain on high alert, activate emergency plans, and ensure timely evacuation from vulnerable areas to minimize loss of life and property. Citizens are advised to stay informed through official channels and avoid unnecessary travel during adverse weather conditions.
