Islamabad – Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has convened a crucial meeting on Monday afternoon at the Prime Minister House to approve a comprehensive national austerity policy, as the government seeks to navigate mounting economic challenges exacerbated by the volatile regional and global situation.
According to official sources, the high-level session has been called to forge a united front between the federation and the provinces. To this end, the chief ministers of all four provinces, the chief minister of Gilgit-Baltistan, and the prime minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir have been specially invited to attend.
A United Front for Economic Relief
Sources indicate that the meeting’s primary agenda is to secure a consensus-based approval for the national austerity policy. The forum will review the country’s overall administrative and economic situation, with a focus on developing a joint strategy to provide immediate relief to the public amidst the current financial pressures.
The economic backdrop is tense, with global oil prices soaring due to the widening Middle East conflict and domestic inflation remaining a key concern. The government is under pressure to demonstrate fiscal responsibility while also cushioning the impact on ordinary citizens.
Digital Governance on the Table
In a bid to reduce administrative expenditure and modernize workflows, the meeting is expected to consider several forward-looking proposals. Important decisions anticipated during the session include:
- Virtual Meetings: A proposal to conduct official meetings through Zoom and other video-conferencing platforms to save time and travel costs.
- Remote Education: Implementing policies for holding school and college classes online where feasible.
- Work-from-Home: Introducing work-from-home arrangements in various government offices to reduce overheads and energy consumption.
Acknowledging Security Success
The meeting will also take stock of the broader security situation. The Prime Minister is expected to laud the security forces for their recent successes, including the killing of 13 terrorists in intelligence-based operations across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, demonstrating the government’s commitment to national security alongside economic reforms.
