Russia Rejects European Peacekeepers Plan for Ukraine, Calls It “Dangerous”

Jan 8, 2026

Moscow Russia on Thursday strongly rejected a proposal to deploy European peacekeepers to Ukraine, calling the plan “dangerous” and accusing Kyiv and its allies of forming an “axis of war.” The remarks have dampened hopes that the initiative could help bring an end to the nearly four-year-long conflict.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said the security guarantees discussed by Ukraine’s allies at a recent summit in Paris were unacceptable to Moscow and described them as “destructive.” Ukraine’s allies had agreed on key security measures for Kyiv, including a possible peacekeeping force, in case a ceasefire deal is reached.

The statement comes as Russian missile and drone strikes plunged hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians into darkness during freezing temperatures. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the attacks showed Russia remained committed to continuing the war, despite ongoing diplomatic efforts led by US President Donald Trump to broker a deal between Kyiv and Moscow.
