Trump Threatens 100% Tariffs on Canadian Goods as Carney Sticks to Trade Strategy

Jan 25, 2026

OTTAWA : U.S. President Donald Trump threatened Saturday to impose 100 per cent tariffs on Canadian goods if Canada “makes a deal with China,” a claim Ottawa says has no basis in current policy.

Prime Minister Mark Carney responded later in the day by posting an online advertisement reaffirming that the federal government’s response to economic threats will remain focused on what Canada can control, rather than reacting to rhetoric from Washington.

Speaking on Parliament Hill on Sunday, federal ministers acknowledged the seriousness of Trump’s remarks but said the threat only reinforces the need for Canada to continue reducing its trade dependence on the United States.

The tariff warning marks the latest escalation in tensions between the two countries and follows Carney’s recent trade-focused visit to China, as well as his high-profile speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

Canadian officials have said Ottawa is not pursuing a trade agreement with China, despite Trump’s comments.
