Yousuf Raza Gilani has confirmed that a luxury vehicle worth Rs90 million was purchased for his use using funds from the Senate’s budget.
According to sources, the high-end vehicle was acquired through the budget of the Senate of Pakistan and has already been delivered to the Senate Secretariat in Islamabad.
When contacted about the purchase, Gilani acknowledged the acquisition, stating that the vehicle had actually been ordered in May last year using savings from the Senate’s previous budget.
He explained that he had considered returning the car due to the country’s difficult economic conditions, but officials informed him that the vehicle had already been delivered.
Debate Over Public Spending
The purchase comes at a time when government spending is under increased scrutiny amid Pakistan’s economic challenges.
Earlier in June, Muhammad Aurangzeb told lawmakers at the Parliament House Islamabad that both the Senate chairman and the speaker of the National Assembly receive a monthly salary of Rs2.15 million.
The statement sparked criticism from Khawaja Asif, who argued that the large salary increases for top parliamentary officials amounted to “economic obscenity” given the country’s financial situation.
The revelation about the luxury car purchase has further fueled debate about government spending and the use of public funds by senior officials.
