Fire Breaks Out in Cargo Truck on Indus Highway in Dera Ismail Khan

DERA ISMAIL KHAN – A container truck carrying clothing caught fire on the Indus Highway on Monday near the village of Dhora Solahn Adda, in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa’s Dera Ismail Khan, destroying goods worth millions of rupees, police said.

According to police, the cause of the fire has yet to be determined. The blaze engulfed the vehicle, reducing the cargo to ashes. Thick smoke spread across the area, completely closing the road to traffic.

Traffic Disrupted

Traffic on the Indus Highway, the main road from Peshawar to Karachi, was temporarily suspended, and the road was closed for 1.5 to 2 hours as emergency services rushed to the scene to bring the fire under control. After the fire was extinguished, the truck’s remains were removed from the highway, and the road was reopened.

No Casualties Reported

Authorities said no casualties have been reported so far, while an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire.

Recent Road Accidents in K-P

On April 25, at least 11 people were injured in a traffic accident on the Karakoram Highway in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa’s Shangla district. Rescue 1122 told The Express Tribune that the incident occurred near the Maira area within the jurisdiction of Shangla after nightfall, reportedly due to poor visibility on the main highway.

Pakistan’s Road Safety Crisis

Pakistan records tens of thousands of road accidents annually. The World Health Organisation estimates that more than 27,000 people die each year on the country’s roads, while hundreds of thousands are injured. The Indus Highway, a major artery connecting Peshawar to Karachi, has seen numerous accidents over the years due to poor road conditions, driver error, and vehicle maintenance issues.

Analysis: A Costly Incident

The fire on the Indus Highway destroyed goods worth millions of rupees. For the owner of the cargo — and the truck owner — the financial loss is significant. For the traders whose goods were lost, there may be insurance claims, delivery delays, and business disruption.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Electrical faults, overheating brakes, or even arson are all possibilities. The lack of casualties is fortunate; the closure of the highway for nearly two hours caused delays for other travellers.

As Pakistan continues to grapple with economic challenges, every loss of goods — whether by fire, accident, or other causes — adds to the burden. For the driver and owner of the truck, the coming days will be spent dealing with investigators and insurers.
