Alberta Launches Website for Proposed Oil Pipeline to B.C. Coast

Edmonton : The Alberta government has launched a dedicated website to provide information about a proposed bitumen pipeline to the northwest coast of British Columbia, aiming to create a central hub for project updates and public engagement.

According to the province, the website is intended to ensure transparency and encourage open dialogue about the project. It includes a section addressing common misconceptions, including claims that construction has already begun, that Alberta is funding the pipeline, or that a specific route has been selected.

In October, the Alberta government announced plans to invest $14 million in early-stage planning work. However, officials have emphasized that the long-term goal is for the private sector to lead the project, with Indigenous partners playing a key role.

Support for the proposed pipeline was a major component of a broad energy agreement signed late last year between Alberta Premier Danielle Smith and Prime Minister Mark Carney.

The province said it plans to submit an application by July 1 to the federal major projects office, a new body designed to accelerate approval of infrastructure projects considered to be in Canada’s national interest.

“With the launch of this new web page, we’re providing a transparent, accessible platform for Canadians to stay informed,” Energy and Minerals Minister Brian Jean said in a news release Tuesday.

Early planning efforts include engagement with Indigenous communities, identifying the pipeline’s potential route and capacity, and demonstrating market demand, economic feasibility and the need for additional pipeline capacity.

“This new web page is more than a resource — it’s a commitment to transparency,” said Indigenous Relations Minister Rajan Sawhney. “Indigenous communities are helping guide this project from day one, and access to clear, factual information ensures their leadership continues to shape every step.”
