British-Pakistani Saadia Saadat Makes History as First Muslim Councillor Elected from Reading’s Caversham Heights

LONDON: British-Pakistani community leader and social activist Saadia Saadat has made history after becoming the first Muslim and Pakistani councillor elected from the Caversham Heights ward of Reading Borough Council on the outskirts of London.

Her victory marks a significant milestone in local British politics, as she is currently the only Pakistani and Muslim councillor to win from the ward during England’s recent local elections.

Representing the Conservative Party, Saadia secured the seat through an energetic grassroots campaign despite growing competition from the Reform and Green parties across several constituencies in England.

Political observers noted that her strong door-to-door outreach campaign and direct engagement with local residents played a key role in transforming a ward previously held by the Labour Party into a Conservative win.

Saadia Saadat is widely respected among Pakistani, Muslim, and wider multicultural communities in Reading for her years of social, political, and welfare-related work. Over the years, she has led and supported numerous community development projects while also launching initiatives focused on public welfare and social inclusion.

A graduate of National University of Sciences and Technology, commonly known as NUST, Saadia currently serves in a senior role at a multinational company in the United Kingdom. She is also associated with NUST UK in a prominent leadership capacity, helping strengthen educational and professional links between Britain and Pakistan.

Having lived in Britain for nearly two decades, Saadia has earned recognition from multiple social and civic organisations for her contributions to community development and public service. Her work has been acknowledged through numerous awards and certificates, including honours presented at the House of Lords.

In addition to her political work, Saadia is also known for actively participating in discussions on social and political issues through television appearances and opinion articles published in international newspapers. Her commentary often highlights challenges facing minority communities, women, and immigrants in Britain.

Following her historic election victory, Saadia dedicated the achievement to her father, Zafar Saadat, crediting his encouragement and unwavering support as a major source of inspiration throughout her journey.

Speaking after the results were announced, Saadia thanked voters for placing their trust in her and pledged to continue serving the community with commitment and integrity.

“I am deeply grateful to the people of my constituency for placing their trust in me. I will continue my journey of public service with even greater dedication and commitment as their elected councillor,” she said.

Her election is being celebrated by British-Pakistani communities across the United Kingdom as an important example of increasing representation and diversity in local governance.
