ANKARA/JERUSALEM: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has warned that Israel’s military actions in Syria and Lebanon have reached a point where they directly threaten Turkey’s national security, while also posing a broader risk to regional and global stability.
The remarks sparked a sharp response from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who accused Erdogan of hypocrisy and rejected Turkey’s criticism of Israel’s military operations.
Erdogan Says Israel’s Actions Endanger Entire Region
Addressing lawmakers from his ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) in parliament on Wednesday, Erdogan said Israel’s military activities in neighboring countries have become a serious concern for Turkey.
“The attacks by Netanyahu and his network on Lebanon and Syria have brought the issue to a point where it also threatens Turkey,” Erdogan said.
The Turkish president emphasized that Ankara views the security and stability of Syria and Lebanon as closely connected to its own national security interests.
He warned that the ongoing conflicts risk creating a wider regional crisis that could impact multiple countries beyond the Middle East.
Turkey Remains One of Israel’s Strongest Critics
Turkey has emerged as one of the most vocal critics of Israel’s military operations in Gaza, Lebanon, Syria, and Iran.
Ankara has repeatedly accused Israel of destabilizing the region and undermining prospects for peace.
The Turkish government has suspended trade relations with Israel and has supported legal efforts in international forums aimed at holding Israeli leaders accountable for actions during ongoing conflicts.
Erdogan reiterated that Israel’s policies represent a growing challenge to regional peace and security.
“Israel’s aggression is not only a threat to the region but to the entire world,” he said.
Cyprus and Eastern Mediterranean Concerns
During his address, Erdogan also accused Israel of contributing to instability in the Eastern Mediterranean and Cyprus.
He alleged that certain regional actors were cooperating with Israel in ways that could undermine Turkish and Turkish Cypriot interests.
Without naming specific countries, Erdogan warned against actions that could affect Turkey’s strategic interests in the region.
“Nobody should chase adventures,” he said.
“If the rights of Turkey and Turkish Cypriots are violated in the Eastern Mediterranean, our response will be very clear and very strong.”
The comments reflect Ankara’s long-standing concerns regarding maritime boundaries, energy resources, and political tensions surrounding Cyprus.
Calls for International Action
Erdogan urged world powers and international institutions to adopt a firmer stance toward Israel.
He argued that the international community’s silence had emboldened Israeli leadership and encouraged further military actions.
“Pulling Israel back within the bounds of international law has become a shared responsibility of all humanity,” Erdogan stated.
Turkey has consistently advocated for diplomatic solutions and has called for greater international involvement in efforts to reduce regional tensions.
Netanyahu Responds Strongly
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu quickly responded to Erdogan’s criticism through a statement posted on social media platform X.
Netanyahu rejected the Turkish president’s accusations and described him as an “antisemitic dictator.”
“The antisemitic dictator Erdogan, who is carrying out genocide against the Kurds, supports the Hamas terrorist organisation, oppresses his own people, and imprisons political opponents, is the last person who can preach morality to Israel,” Netanyahu said.
The Israeli leader defended Israel’s military operations and insisted that the country would continue taking action against threats posed by Iran and allied militant groups.
Israel Defends Military Operations
Netanyahu emphasized that Israeli security forces would continue operations aimed at protecting the country and addressing regional security threats.
“Israel and the Israel Defense Forces, the most moral army in the world, will continue to act with strength against Iran and its proxies, which threaten the Middle East and the entire world,” he said.
Israeli officials have repeatedly argued that military actions in neighboring countries are necessary to prevent attacks against Israel and maintain national security.
Regional Tensions Continue to Rise
The exchange between Erdogan and Netanyahu comes amid escalating tensions across the Middle East, including ongoing conflicts involving Iran, Hezbollah, Syria, and Gaza.
Diplomatic observers note that relations between Turkey and Israel have deteriorated significantly in recent months, with both governments frequently exchanging criticism over regional policies.
The latest verbal confrontation highlights the widening divisions among regional powers as conflicts continue to reshape the political and security landscape of the Middle East.
Uncertain Outlook
As military confrontations and diplomatic disputes intensify across the region, international efforts to achieve de-escalation face growing challenges.
Analysts warn that continued tensions between key regional actors could further complicate peace initiatives and increase the risk of broader instability.
For now, both Turkey and Israel remain firmly committed to their respective positions, leaving little indication of an immediate improvement in relations.
