COPENHAGEN: Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen warned Monday that any attempt by the United States to seize Greenland by force would destroy 80 years of transatlantic security ties, after President Donald Trump reiterated his interest in acquiring the mineral-rich Arctic territory.Trump’s recent military intervention in Venezuela has intensified concerns about his designs on Greenland, which holds rare earth minerals and occupies a strategic location as polar ice melts, opening new shipping routes. Trump previously stated, “We need Greenland from the standpoint of national security, and Denmark is not going to be able to do it.”In response, Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederick Nielsen called on Trump to back off, emphasizing respect for international law. “That’s enough now. No more pressure. No more insinuations. No more fantasies of annexation,” Nielsen said. He urged renewed dialogue through proper channels, stating, “The situation is not such that the United States can conquer Greenland… we must restore the good cooperation we once had.”Several European countries and the European Union have expressed support for Denmark, a NATO ally, while Frederiksen stressed that a military attack on a NATO member could jeopardize the alliance and post-World War II security structures.
